About
HI – I’m Charlie Jackson and I’m running for IEEE Region 6 Director.
I have had a broad experience with IEEE. I started out as a chapter chair. Right now, I’m serving as the Region 6 Southern Area Coordinator and SUSTECH Local Arrangements Chair. Look at the breadth and depth of service to IEEE on the “Volunteer History” page.
I’d like to talk about why I’m an IEEE Member.
I have a passion for learning. I like to see interesting talks. I’ve learned that if someone doesn’t organize them, then they don’t happen. IEEE provides the framework to make them happen.
I want to be part of the scientific revolution, where a community exchanges ideas, and develops technology that benefits humanity. Again, IEEE Provides the framework. I’ve been a part of phased array technology that will impact 5G, and space based solar power satellites. I’ve been part of a community that makes hardware for space applications.
I have a sense of community, helping engineers to network technically and socially. Again, IEEE Provides the framework.
Networking in IEEE has had a huge effect on my career, and I want to make sure the networking is there for others. I had a chance to participate in the dot-com bubble. My IEEE connections helped me find a good company. Later, after my bout with cancer, my IEEE connections helped me find a job quickly, back in the Aerospace industry.

Position Statement
I’ve got a broad experience with IEEE: chapters, sections, conferences, Region, society, and the BOD level. I’ve rolled up my sleeves and done the hard work at chapter and section levels
- Rejuvenated two dormant Sections that became Coastal Los Angeles Section
- 8 years as treasurer
- Created CLASTECH, a 1-day section meeting that supports working engineers
I’m a cancer survivor, and a Fellow of the IEEE.
Region 6 is an exciting place for IEEE members. Region 6 is the largest US region; some sections that have 400 members; some have 4000 members. It is a community of universities, companies, innovators, and consultants. To make Region 6 a better place, the Director needs to make a full time commitment. To make region 6 a better place, strategic decisions need to be made to choose what to keep, what to fix, what to cut, and what to add.
I want to support all phases of our careers, starting with students, young professionals entering the workforce, mid careers, and retirement. I’ll be retiring soon, and will be able to dedicate my time to the job.
With declining membership, a strong focus on membership development will be essential; but we need to reduce overhead too.
Conferences provide a tangible member benefit. I will:
- Support regional conferences such as Rising Stars, SUSTECH, and GHTC.
- Improve society involvement with the conferences.
- Work with TAB initiative like the IoT and 5G.
- Help facilitate society conferences in Region 6.I have a passion for the IEEE community,
I will give the Region 6 Director position my undivided attention. I will not use the position as a stepping stone to other positions.
